The Role of a Trustee at McCord Memorial Library

  • What is the role of a Board Member? What are the responsibilities that come with being on the Board? What are the expectations for Board Members?

Who can serve as Board Members?

  • The Board of Directors are chosen and nominated by the existing Board of Directors, along with the assistance of the current Library Director.
  • Board Members must be 18 years or older and must live in North East, PA.

Primary Responsibilities of Board Members

  • While this isn’t a comprehensive list, these are some of the annual and common responsibilities of Board Members at McCord:
    • Employ the Library Director (Librarian)
    • Set Library Policy
    • Determine annual budget, employee wages and bonuses
    • Review grievances from the ruling of the Personnel Committee
    • Create library policies
    • Responding to community input and challenges
  • Board members meet once a month with the Librarian to discuss current needs and events of the McCord Memorial Library (no meetings July-August).

But… What’s it really like?

  • Library Board Members are advocates for their local libraries. The core value of the role is to be an advocate for all the work your library does for your community.
  • By being on the library Board of Trustees, you’re committing to understanding how your local library functions. In order to serve on the Board of Directors, it’s important to understand the library’s role within the community. As you sit on the Board, you will learn about the library and how it governs within the community, but also how it functions at county and state levels.
  • Our library offers essential services to the community. A lot of work goes on behind the scenes to make sure these services are available to all members of North East and Erie County. The Library needs informed, passionate individuals who care about library services in order for the system to not just work, but thrive. Being a Board Member is a way to give back to your community and to ensure that access to information and services is provided for all members, for generations to come.
