About Books

Donated Books “for the Collection”

Just a reminder that we do not accept donations to the collection. If you have a rare or “special item” contact the library to set up an appointment with the Library Director. After examining the book, the Director will determine if it will join the collection or not.

Even if the books are in great condition/we don’t have them, please come back when our director is at the library or leave your contact information at the Main Desk.

This policy is lifted during time periods where we are accepting donations for the used book sale. Typically, we accept donations for these sales in the weeks prior to the sale itself. We cannot accept books year round as our storage space is limited.

If you would like to support the library in other ways, you can make a memorial donation, a one-time monetary donation, a donation to our annual appeal, or purchase any of our available fundraising items (such as bags and cookbooks). The library also always appreciates volunteer help. Check out the Friends of McCord Library facebook group to learn more.

If the items you are wishing to donate must be donated immediately, the Friends of the Erie County Public Library has multiple donation events year round. You can check out their website here. Items can also be donated to the 4N.I.N.E. thrift store located at 49 Smedley street.

We appreciate the overwhelming generosity of our community and pre-emptively thank everyone for their understanding.

Requesting a New Book

So many books are published nowadays that some hidden gems might slip through the cracks. If you happen to find a new book in the book page, or on a best seller list that you think might be a good fit for our collection, let a staff member know. We write these suggestions down and our director might decide to purchase the book. And if we do, we want you to get to read it first.

Similar to the rules that pertain to book donations, all requests are truly that, requests. Often the book is already owned by another library in the PLEC system so we can put a hold on the book for you. Our space is limited so tough decisions on what books we buy have to be made.

Requesting an ILL book

But what if the book you want was published in 1937 and no one in the PLEC system has a copy? That would not be a new book request but never fear, ILLs are here! ILLs, or Inter Library Loans, are requests to sent out to all the libraries in the state of Pennsylvania. This includes the academic libraries. So if you want to read someone’s master thesis on cheese, we can place the request.

Unlike books placed on hold these books have special due dates that might differ by the lending library. And these items also must arrive through USPS or UPS so the due dates are varied. Unfortunately we cannot control these due dates. The due dates can range from one week to 60 days. No matter what the due date, the item must be returned to its home library on that date. There are no renewals for ILL items.

See everyone next month!
